Co-Teaching at Hanover-Horton High School
This is our thirteenth year using Co-Teaching at H-H High School. This progressive teaching model means a general education teacher and a special education teacher are present in the same classroom. The students in the classroom benefit from two different teachers with different strengths, and they all get extra help and attention. I will be co-teaching this year with Mr. Marshall (Chem Concepts), Ms. Cotter (Adv. Algebra C&S), and Mr. Baumgartner (Biology). My duties include instructing the whole group as well as providing support, clarification, and remediation to any learners who need help. I share all normal teaching responsibilities, including planning, grading, and parent communications.
Co-Teaching allows students with disabilities to experience greater inclusion in the regular curriculum. The resource room students will be fully included in the general education class, learning the same lessons and doing the same activities. They will still receive the accommodations in their current IEP -- if they are entitled to extra time on tests or assignments, or reading help on tests, or anything else, I will insure that it happens. Accordingly, there may be times when the resource room students need to be "pulled out" to my resource room for tests or out-loud reading.
We are pleased to use the Co-Teaching model in many different classes this year. We hope it will be a positive experience for all students!
